Come and Go, 2007

This film was made in 2006-2007 for The Shetland Museum and Archives in Lerwick, Shetland. It is part of the permanent display about the local Maritime Industries where it is played as a continuous loop. I was asked to make a film that tackled the theme of Homelife. I have tried to reference past and present aspects of every day life and culture of Shetland that touch the homelife of women in this island community. In some of my interviews with Shetland women, they recalled how as children the men in their families would come and go with the fishing, hence the title. The shortwave radio was important for communication in the mid-20th century, whereas today mobile technologies have replaced these. One woman told me how she recalled her family huddled around the short wave. David Sjoberg, a Shetland musician, composed the soundtrack.
